The Sapele Story

Sapele Office Interiors Inc. is a full-service corporate office furnishings organization incorporated March 25, 1998 in Calgary, Alberta by founder Millie Atkinson.

Sapele, (pronounced "Sahpeelee"), is a beautiful wood from Central Africa (also known as ribbon wood) and represents both Ms. Atkinson's passion for custom wood corporate furnishings and her passion for world culture and art. Sapele's logo, a gazelle in flight framed in a brilliant orange horizon, speaks to our speed and awareness in serving customer needs. The spirit of the wood and animal captures Sapele's vision of creating strong client relationships that endure over time through mutual respect and value.

Those who know Millie and her staff know the flair and fun they all have as part of the "Sapele Way".  In fact, Sapele incorporates much of its brand into the staff's daily life.  As a percussionist, Ms. Atkinson studies and plays African drums, both Djembe and Sabar, from West Africa.  It is not uncommon to find both clients and staff alike participating in spontaneous or planned drumming both in the show room or off-site in workshops.

Some might wonder how playing African drums has anything to do with office furnishings. "More than you think", says Millie.  "No matter how much fun and spirit music has, it requires a tremendous amount of accuracy and attention to detail to achieve its purpose.  Running a business requires much of the same: accuracy, detail, and of course - fun."

Her philosophy has worked.  Since its inception in 1998, Sapele has experienced exponential growth in the industry through their unique holistic, educational, and consultative approach - catching the attention of local businesses and media.  Whether it is space planning, improving ergonomics, decreasing absenteeism/turnover, reducing WCB claims, or even just the basic selection and acquisition of top-quality furnishings, Sapele continues to use its unique blend of service and expertise to exceed client expectations in every way.
